This is difficult… since you are asking who the best artist of the two is I would have to go with Picasso. He was just as skilled in Painting representational subjects as Velazquez was, but Picasso was one of the most important figures of Modern Art. He is maybe the main reason that Modern Art was accepted as being art. He discovered so many ways to express himself, it is just incredible to look at the variation of all his work. Also, he painted many compositions that plead the world , to quote John Lennon, “to give peace a chance.” He was a major activist for peace, and I think that is a very noble cause and makes him a better artist then Velazquez. My final point is comparison of the two artist’s fame. If you ask a person on the street to name a Velazquez painting, 19 times out of 20 they won’t have any idea what sort of Paintings he did, much less a name of one of the paintings. Picasso has become so infused into the culture of the world. If you asked that same person to name a Picasso painting, they may say Guernica or Old Guitarist… the list can go on. Picasso is a better artist, because he can paint just as well as Velazquez, he explored so many different avenues, and his fame is almost equal to Da Vinci and the other old masters.
