How do you make quality Prints from your Paintings?
I have made some Watercolor Paintings to give friends. I would like to keep the originals. How do I make quality prints from the paintings, which will look good enough to frame and give as gifts?
I know of many watercolorists who use their own Epson pirnters. As long as the ink is archival (colorfast for 75-100+ years) and your printer can make a faithful color reproduction, and use good, acid-free paper (card stock weight), you should be ok. You can find one of many, many places that will Print you a “giclee” but that is just a fancy term for ink jet anyway . . .
And the correct term for making copies of your Painting is “reproduction” as “print” technically refers to a lithographic or offset process, and is done in numbered editions or “runs.”
If you crop your paintings just right you can buy precut mats that will fit them perfectly. It is customary to leave about 1/4″ around the edges of the image before the mat starts, and to sign the prints, putting the title in one lower corner and your name in the other . . .in pencil. However, some Artists sign the matboard just below the image.
